Shantou is one of the first four Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in China, a metropolis of Chaoshan People and a famous hometown to numerous overseas Chinese around the world. Located at the intersection of Pan-Pearl River Delta and the West Bank Economic Zone across Taiwan Strait, the city has always served as a transportation hub, cargo export and import center and products distribution center for east Guangdong Province, southeast Jiangxi Province and southwest Fujian Province. Shantou is now a modern port city and a central city in east Guangdong Province with 2245 km2 land area and 5.55 million population.
